A critical component of the Champion City Scholars Program is the development of a support system to encourage the young scholars to work toward a college education and to help expose them to enrichment experiences they might not otherwise have. The level of involvement of each mentor will vary according to his/her availability. However, the goal is to spend at least 30 minutes with the scholars every month. The goal is to make enough visits during the year to establish a relationship with the students.

What types of activities will the mentors do with the scholars?
What each mentor does with the students will vary based on what the scholars and the mentors want to do. Suggested activities include:

  • Have lunch with the group one day per month
  • Host the scholars at your business or other area businesses
  • Check up on scholars’ academic progress
  • Attend Clark State events such as athletic events or artistic events
  • Tour the Clark County Library
  • Discuss current events
  • Have a book discussion group
  • Explore career possibilities
  • Call and encourage them to attend group programming
  • Take them on field trips in and out of Springfield such as COSI, Heritage Center, Air Force Museum, etc.

Mentors are also strongly encouraged to attend mentor training sessions and group programming.
