Basic Peace Officer Training Academy

The Clark State Basic Peace Officer Training Academy is designed to meet the requirements of the Ohio Police Officer Training Council (OPOTC). Successful graduates of this program will be recommended to take the state certification examination. If you are interested in attending the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy, please complete the Student Enrollment Interest Form. This will provide us with a record of your interest, after which time the academy commander will contact you directly.

The Basic Peace Officer Training Academy is held in the evening in January and June from 5:30 - 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The day academy is held in March and July from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All academies include several weekends where some training events are helf off-site.

Admissions Requirements
Specific admission requirements which must be met before you will be admitted to this program:

  • Must be 21 years of age by completion of the academy.
  • Visit the academy office with a valid driver’s license and complete the enrollment paperwork required by OPOTA.
  • If you have no prior college experience, you will be required to take the COMPASS placement test. The COMPASS placement test will assess skill levels in reading, writing and mathematics. If you test below a given skill level, you may be required to take a college preparatory education (CPE) course. College preparatory education courses are designed to build skills so that you will be able to succeed in the Police Academy.
  • Submit livescan fingerprints at the Sheriff’s Office for the State of Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation (BCI& I) and the FBI to determine any criminal record, such as felonies or any domestic violence convictions, that would disqualify you from the academy.
  • Obtain a physical and return the signed medical release from a physician.
  • You must meet the approval of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission before entering training.

Uniform requirements
Uniforms are required for all police academy students. The uniform shall consist of a police academy shirt, uniform pants, black belt, black socks and black shoes or boots. There are no exceptions to the uniform requirement.

Mandatory Attendance
All hours of instruction in the police academy are mandatory. There are no excused absences from the policy academy. All classroom instruction is conducted at the Brinkman Educational Center, 100 South Limestone Street, Springfield. However, certain portions of skill training are conducted at other locations.

Equipment
During firearms training, the police academy will provide a pistol, ammunition, holster, duty belt, belt stays and ammo pouches for the student’s use.

Physical Fitness
All Basic Peace Officer Training Academy students must meet physical fitness standards in the last 80 hours of the academy.

Cost
The cost of the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy is approximately $3,300 for tuition and fees. Tuition will include the required Ohio Criminal Code Handbook.
