A preview and introductory course in basic math. Emphasis will be on real-world problems and shop applications with many examples and a high level of student participation rather than just lecture and note-taking. Subject areas to be covered are basic operations with whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; simple equations, their applications and solution methods; ratio, proportion and percentages with emphasis on problem solving uses; geometry of common shapes, areas, volumes with emphasis on the circle and triangle; angular measure and the special geometry of the triangle; use of ratios to define the trigonometry functions and the use of simple trigonometry relationships to solve every day problems. Use of the scientific calculator for solution of problems will be included.
