Are You Prepared for Online Learning?

Success in an online course requires maturity and a strong commitment by you. You should be self-motivated and have basic computer and technology skills. Online courses require at least as much time as on-campus courses, so time management skills are extremely important. Written communication is used extensively in the online learning environment and takes place through postings, e-mail and chat.

The following quiz is a self-administered tool to assist you in determining your readiness for online course work. Answer honestly—no one will see this but you.

My need to take this course now is:

high - I need it immediately
moderate - I could take it on campus later or substitute another course
low - it could be postponed

As a reader, I would classify myself as:

good - I usually understand written materials without help
average - I sometimes need help to understand written works.
slower than average

I would classify myself as someone who:

often gets things done ahead of time
needs reminding to get things done on time.
puts things off until the last minute.

I need faculty comments on my assignments:

within a few days, so I can review what I did.
within a few hours, or I forget what I did.
right away, or I get very frustrated.

Live, face-to-face classroom discussion is:

not particularly necessary to me.
somewhat important to me.
very important to me.

Feeling that I am part of a traditional, face-to-face classroom is:

not particularly necessary to me.
somewhat important to me.
very important to me.

When an instructor hands out written directions for an assignment, I prefer:

figuring out the directions myself.
trying to follow the directions on my own, then asking for help as needed.
having the instructions explained to me.

When I am asked to use CDs, a computer, voice mail, e-mail, or other technologies new to me:

I look forward to learning new skills.
I feel apprehensive, but try anyway.
I put it off or try to avoid it.

Considering my professional and personal schedule, the amount of time I have to work on an online course is:

more than enough time for an on-campus course.
the same as for an on-campus course.
less than for an on-campus course.

When I need help understanding the subject:

I am comfortable approaching an instructor for clarification
I am uncomfortable approaching an instructor for clarification.
I never approach an instructor to admit I don’t understand something.
