What is Gmail?
Gmail is a free, Internet-based e-mail service created by Google. Clark State is using Gmail for all student e-mail accounts starting Fall Quarter 2011. Student Gmail accounts include tons of storage space, a choice between threaded or traditional view of messages, Labels and access to several Google Apps.

How do I log into Gmail?
Log into Gmail with your Clark State username. Your initial password is your seven-digit Student ID number. (Don't know what this information is? You can find it on your acceptance letter and class schedule.)

I’m a returning student, can I still access my old GroupWise e-mail account?
Yes, but you need to hurry! Access to your old GroupWise e-mail will be disabled after September 30, 2011. Clark State wants to give returning students enough time to go into their GroupWise account and save or transfer anything important.

How do I save important e-mail messages in my old GroupWise account?
The easiest way to "save" important messages in GroupWise is to forward them from your old GroupWise student e-mail to your new account in Gmail (or to any personal e-mail that you use). Since you have a new e-mail address, this should make it fairly easy. Follow the steps below.

  • Step 1 – Log into your GroupWise e-mail account and open the e-mail that you want to forward. You can also right-click on the e-mail while it’s closed and select "Forward" from the pop-up menu.
  • Step 2 – Click on the Forward icon at the top of the e-mail message.
  • Step 3 – Enter your new Gmail address. This will be your username followed by @students.clarkstate.edu and click on "Send."

An alternative to forwarding your GroupWise e-mail messages is to print them out and keep them as hardcopies.

How do I save my contacts that I have in GroupWise?
Unfortunately, there isn’t a good way to do this. If you have added contacts in your student GroupWise e-mail account, we suggest that you copy them and add them manually to your new Gmail account. There’s always a down side to something new, so this must be it! We hope it won’t be too much of an inconvenience for you.

Is this Gmail account just like a regular free Gmail account that I sign up with through Google?
It is very similar. The biggest differences you will notice will be the Gmail address, the way you access your Gmail account and the amount of storage.

Regular Gmail users that sign up for accounts with Google will have e-mail address that end with @gmail.com. Since Clark State is providing you the Gmail account, it will reflect Clark State’s name in the address and will end with @students.clarkstate.edu.

Personal Gmail accounts are accessed online through Google. Your Gmail account is access through a special URL: https://students.clarkstate.edu. The Student E-mail link located at the bottom of the Clark State home page will take you directly to your Gmail login page. You can also bookmark or add the page to your "Favorites" for easy access.

Unlike the 7+ GB of storage space you receive with a free personal Gmail account, you will get 25 GB of space with your student account!

Does my new Gmail have any effect on the e-mail I use in Angel for my online courses?
No. If you are taking online courses, you will use a completely separate e-mail account in Angel. Angel is the online system Clark State uses for online instruction. If you are a returning student and you set-up your Angel e-mail to forward automatically to your old student GroupWise e-mail, you will need to reset that with your new Gmail address.

I'm a returning student, has my student e-mail address changed?
Yes, but it changed only slightly. Your new Student Gmail address is your username followed by @students.clarkstate.edu. If you are wondering what changed...your old e-mail address didn’t have the "students" part in it.

Are Clark State employees using Gmail?
No, only students are using Gmail at this time. Even though students and employees were both using GroupWise previously, it was still two completely separate e-mail systems. Employees are anxiously waiting when we can move to Gmail too!

Can I get help transferring my messages out of GroupWise?
Yes. If you run into problems trying to forward your messages from GroupWise to Gmail, please contact the Clark State IT HelpDesk at 937-328-6121 for assistance. Just make sure you give yourself and the IT HelpDesk staff enough time to solve any problems.

How long do I have before GroupWise is disabled?
Clark State will disable your student e-mail account in GroupWise after September 30, 2011. It is extremely important that you go through your GroupWise e-mail and determine if there is anything you want to save. After September 30, 2011, you will no longer have access to it.

I’m a new student, do I have a GroupWise e-mail account also?
No. If you are a first-time, new student at Clark State Fall Quarter 2011, you will not have a GroupWise account. This means that you don’t have to worry about saving any e-mail messages from the old system!

What else comes with the Gmail account?
In addition to the new Gmail account, students get access to several Google Apps, including a calendar, Google Docs, News, etc.

How can I learn more about Gmail?
Google provides an excellent Help feature. You will find detailed information about Gmail at: http://mail.google.com/support. Strangely enough, there isn’t a direct link on the Gmail page for this, so you may want to bookmark it or add it to your Favorites if you think you may return to it later.

It is important to keep in mind that you are using a Gmail account provided by Clark State. Some of the information you will find in this Help feature is meant for people who have signed up for a free personal Gmail account with Google and will not always be applicable.

The Clark State IT HelpDesk will also provide you Gmail support when you need it. You can reach the IT HelpDesk at 937-328-6121.

What are Google Docs?
Everyone is familiar with Microsoft Office to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Google Docs is an alternative to using Microsoft Office or any other software application. Along the top of the Gmail window, you will see several links. The Documents link will take you to a new area where you can create Google’s version of documents, spreadsheets and presentations. You can also upload documents that have been created, and share your documents with others. Because students now have access to Google Docs, it is important to check with your instructor to find out what is acceptable file formats when submitting electronic assignments.

Where can I learn more about Google Docs?
Where can I learn more about Google Docs? Google provides an excellent Help feature. You will find detailed information about Google Docs at: http://docs.google.com/support. If you don’t have this URL handy, you can find the link under the Options button next to your username in the upper right corner of the window.

It is important to keep in mind that you are using a Gmail account provided by Clark State. Some of the information you will find in this Help feature is meant for people who have signed up for a free personal Gmail account with Google and will not always be applicable.

What are Google Apps?
Google Apps are what Google calls everything you will get when you have a Gmail account. This includes Google Docs, Calendar, Contacts, Google News, iGoogle, Google Talk, Picasa…the list just keeps going. The Google Calendar and Documents are main links across the top of your Gmail screen. You can access the other apps in Google, by clicking on the "More" link.

Where can I learn more about Google Apps?
It would be very difficult to provide you with all of the information about all of the different Google Apps that you now have access to with your Gmail account. We recommend clicking on the "More" link at the top of your Gmail account screen and learning about each one from Google directly. They are definitely the experts about their products and services!

Can I forward my Gmail to another e-mail address?
Yes you can, and it's fairly easy to do. However, please make sure that the address you forward to remains active. We want to make sure you continue to receive e-mails from Clark State about important information.

After you log in to your Gmail account, click Options at the top right of your screen and select Mail Settings. Choose the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Click on the button to add a forward address.
