MyClarkState is the learning management system for online courses at Clark State. MyClarkState also provides students with instant messaging, message boards, announcements, groups and calendars. You will need your assigned username and seven-digit student number as your password to access MyClarkState.

I have registered for an online course. When will I have access?
What type of equipment and software are required when taking online courses?
What is my login and password?
Your login and password are the same as your GroupWise email and Novell accounts. Your username is the first five letters of your last name followed by your first initial and four numbers. Your username is printed on your class schedule. Your initial password is your seven-digit student ID number. The student ID number is also printed on your class schedule.

What is ANGEL?
ANGEL is a learning management system that provides you access to online courses and learning tools. MyClarkState (frequently, informally referred to as Angel) is the College’s learning management system and is available at http://my.clarkstate.edu. Angel is used to deliver online and hybrid courses electronically and can be used to supplement traditional courses. It also provides the Clark State community with a calendar of events, campus-wide announcements and links to other online student services.

Why take an online course?
Online and hybrid courses may be more convenient for a student with a busy work, travel, home or class schedule. They may also be more convenient for students who have problems with transportation or child care arrangements. If you have time to devote to a class, but cannot commit to a specific day, time, and location, you may want to consider online learning options. Some students also enjoy the interaction benefits online such as being able to communicate anytime, anyplace with other members of the class.

What is the difference between "Online" courses and "Hybrid" courses?
In an online course, all instructional and lab activities are completed in an online environment. They require no visits to campus; however, students may be required to use a proctored testing facility. Hybrid courses combine the elements of the traditional face-to-face classroom and online instruction. These courses require attendance at scheduled sessions on-campus or at clinical locations for lectures, labs or clinical experiences.
Can I earn a degree online or via hybrid course work?
Yes, Clark State offers the Associate of Arts, the Associate of Science, the Associate of Applied Business in Accounting, Management, CyberSecurity, Human Resource Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Marketing and E-Business, and Office Administration, and the Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology, Registered Nursing, and Physical Therapy Assistant.

Can I use AOL to access my course?
Many students report problems when trying to use the AOL browser for their courses. If you are an AOL user, you should download and use one of the Angel supported browsers, Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher, or Firefox 2.0 or higher.
Do I need to be an expert on the computer?
No, however you should be able to send e-mail, attach files to e-mail, and be comfortable using the Internet. Computer basics such as how to create folders and files are helpful.

Are online courses easier than traditional courses?
No, online courses give you flexibility to decide when and where you will study but require a lot of self-discipline and time management. If you have good reading and writing skills, can organize and plan your time, and are self-motivated, you can be successful in online courses. Online courses are different and more convenient but not any easier than traditional courses.
How can I open a Microsoft Word document when I don't have it on my computer at home?
Microsoft provides free viewers for its products. These viewers allow you to open and print the file. Visit Microsoft for more information.

Do I have to access my course at the same time every day?
Typically, the answer is no. However, you will be required to login several times per week at hours that are convenient to you. Your instructor may also identify specific login requirements. Online courses do not take less time than traditional classes, but the time you choose is more flexible.
Can I take both online and traditional courses at the same time?
Yes, many of our students enroll in both online and traditional courses each quarter.

Where do I get my course materials, such as the syllabus and assignments?
Your syllabus, course outline, lecture materials and assignments will be included in your online course. You may also be required to purchase an access code or textbook through the College Bookstore.

Most courses do require a specified textbook.

No.

Yes, all for credit courses qualify for financial aid.

Will I have any interaction with the instructor or other students?
Many people mistakenly assume that they'll feel isolated in an online learning course. To their surprise, most find that online learning courses actually provide a high degree of personal contact. Not only will you and your instructor communicate directly, everyone in the class will have the ability to communicate online.
What if I start a class and decide it's not for me?
Check the Academic Calendar for drop dates and contact your advisor for recommendations.

How does testing work?
Your instructor will decide how testing is handled in the course. Some tests may be given online while others may require a proctored testing environment. The Success Center at Clark State is one such facility. Many colleges and public libraries also provide this service. Your instructor will advise you as to what is expected.
What Internet browser should I use?
Internet Explorer 7.0 and Firefox 2.0 are the recommended and supported browsers.

How do I know if a course is an online learning course?
Online courses are designated with the letter “E” in the section code and hybrid courses have the “H” designation. For example, ACC 111 E1 would be an online course, while ACC 111 H1 would be a hybrid course.
Can I take online classes if I do not live near Clark State?
Yes.

Can I start an online class anytime or work at my own pace?
No. Clark State online classes are not necessarily self-paced. Most online classes will mirror a traditional class in the start and end dates. Although different instructors will have different requirements, each instructor will require the student to participate online a minimum number of times per week.
Will I be required to come to the campus?
No, in an online course, all instructional and lab activities are completed in an online environment. They require no visits to campus; however, students may be required to use a proctored testing facility.

Who will be my instructor?
Online classes are taught by the same Clark State instructors who teach our traditional classes.
Can I access and use the online course site from any computer?
Yes, as long as the computer meets the minimum requirements. You can log into your course from any computer with a Web browser and Internet access.

Can I use a computer at Clark State to take an online course?
Yes, you are welcome to use the computers in the open labs and library for your online courses. Keep in mind that these computers are available on a first come, first serve basis. We can not guarantee that a computer will be available every time you need one. It is recommended that any student taking an online course also have access to a computer with Internet access other than at Clark State.
Why do I see “Course Not Available” when I try to access my ANGEL course?
Online and hybrid courses are available on the first day of the term/quarter. A class may show up on your course list prior to the beginning of the quarter, usually when you register early, however the course contents will not be available until the quarter officially starts.

I have registered for an online course. When will I have access?
If you registered before the first day of the quarter, you will have access on the first day of the quarter. If you registered after the quarter has started, your access will be delayed approximately 48 hours.
What type of equipment and software are required when taking online courses?
You will receive a Student Letter of Introduction (PDF) when you are register for an online course. It will contain important information about the type of equipment and software required for online courses.
