Clark State Community College dedicated the new Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center (275 S. Limestone St., Springfield) on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. Andy Bell, Chair, Clark State Board of Trustees, Dr. Karen E. Rafinski, President, Clark State, Mike McDorman, President, Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Warren Copeland, Mayor, City of Springfield and Stuart Secttor, Executive Director, Clark State Performing Arts Center, presented brief remarks and accepted the facility on behalf of the residents of Springfield and the business and arts communities.
The building has been named to honor the lead donor, Jane B. Hollenbeck. Hollenbeck is
well-known throughout the community for her generosity, especially in the arts community. Hollenbeck is an accomplished artist in her own right, and has helped to make Springfield an especially strong arts community.
Dr. Nicholas and Mrs. Thalia Pavlatos and their family have been involved with Clark State and the Performing Arts Center for many years, in addition to the many other community projects they support. They are frequent visitors to the Performing Arts Center and stepped forward with a leadership gift for the Creative Arts and Conference Center. In recognition of their generosity, the Grand Hall, which will be the heart of the Center, will bear their names.
Building Description
In the early 1990s, Clark State agreed to be the community’s steward for a performing arts center that has played a pivotal role in the revitalization of downtown Springfield. Demand for use of the Center by a wide variety of constituents has risen dramatically in the last 15 years. Over the last few years, numerous focus groups have identified corporate, arts and community needs, which have been incorporated into the design of a beautiful downtown multi-functional center.
The Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center was constructed on Limestone Street, between the Performing Arts Center and the Courtyard by Marriott. It has been designed with the highest possible degree of functional flexibility to meet a wide variety of needs. It consists of approximately 27,000 square feet on two floors.
Two wings connected by a beautiful atrium will accommodate functions with a wide variety of sizes and purposes. The 18-foot tall Grand Hall in the west wing will accommodate up to 500 people at round tables for a meeting, dinner or performance--a capacity not available anywhere else in the downtown area.
The east wing houses break-out rooms, classrooms and labs on two floors. The second floor has arts studio to accommodate traditional and new media visual arts programs for career preparation or personal fulfillment. The second floor provides a permanent home for the Center’s arts outreach programs, such as Project Jericho.
The courtyard and pavilion welcomes visitors before, during and after events. Larger conferences can also make use of the space in the Performing Arts Center and the Brinkman Center across the street.
Cost/Funding
In support of this project, the Clark State Foundation led a campaign to raise the public and private funds necessary to construct the facility. As one element of that fundraising, a grant was secured from The Kresge Foundation, making Clark State the sixth community college in the country and the only organization in Clark County to ever receive one. The $850,000 grant requires an equal match from our community. The campaign was led by Campaign Chair Andy Bell, President, Consolidated Insurance, and Honorary Co-Chairs Linda and Harry Egger. Campaign Cabinet members include: Gary Buroker, Kris Culp, Teresa Demana, Bill Fralick, Hal and Beth Goodrich, Joe Jackson, Randy Kapp, Charlie McFarland, Karen Rafinski, Dennis Roark, Stu Secttor, Steve Sidlo and Hans Wagner.
Funding for the building is a combination of public and private support:

The Benefits
The Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center demonstrates that business, arts, education and the community can share common space - and be stronger and more creative as a result.
- This is a community project that will enhance downtown revitalization. It is an investment in the future of our downtown and our community.
- It underscores Clark State’s commitment to downtown redevelopment, and will serve as the southern anchor to a new arts and park district.
- The facility will meet the conference, trade and professional development needs so often requested by area businesses and organizations.
- It solves the problems associated with limited performance space. The Grand Hall provides a venue for intimate performances and rehearsals, and as a result, Kuss Auditorium will be more available.
- The facility will be the permanent home for arts education and outreach programs in a location that is accessible to large numbers of at-risk populations.
- This is an opportunity to bring $850,000 in funding from the Kresge Foundation to our community.
