Course Requirements

Every self-paced course has course requirements that must be met at the mid-point of the quarter and before the end of the quarter of registration if the student wants to carry the course over into the following quarter. However, you can complete your course as quickly as you wish, even in a day by requesting all of your exams in one sitting, time permitting and by having homework assignments completed and submitted. Or, you may take up to two quarters, providing the course requirements are met. The course requirements can be found in each of the self-paced handbooks.

You must demonstrate sufficient progress as defined in the appropriate course handbook/syllabus in order to continue your course work into the following quarter (if needed). You will receive a temporary grade of IP (In Progress) until you finish the work at the end of the subsequent term. You are strongly encouraged to complete your self-paced course(s) during the quarter of registration if possible, reserving the following quarter for extenuating circumstances. If you have not made sufficient progress in the first quarter, you will receive a grade of F for the course unless you withdrawal from it by submitting a drop form to the Records and Registration Office. You may withdraw from the course up until the program deadline (provided in the course handbook) and still receive a W for the course. There are no extensions beyond the second quarter.

Students who have never taken a self-paced course before should not register for more than two. Self-paced students need far more self-discipline and self-direction to successfully complete the coursework. Self-paced courses offer the student more flexibility, but they are not easier than traditionally taught classes. An on-site orientation session is offered daily during the first week of each quarter in the self-paced lab. The orientation schedule can be found in the self-paced handbook.

Time Management
The best way to complete a self-paced course is to set aside a certain amount of time weekly to work on your course. These courses are not difficult but they do require a considerable time commitment. Do not procrastinate and wait until the end of the quarter before you start your course. Work at a steady pace and don't leave long gaps of time between work sessions. If you do, you'll forget the material you already covered and may have to go back and review it which will take more time.
