GlossaryBEC - stands for Brinkman Educational Center course handbook - contains syllabus and step-by-step instructions for completing a self-paced course courses in the self-paced program - ITS 081 (Beginning Keyboarding), ITS 103 S1 (Information Technology Basics), ITS 12A S1 (Windows Concepts), ITS 12D S1 (Beginning Database-Access), ITS 12K S1 (Keyboarding/Word Processing, ITS 12P (Beginning Presentation Graphics- PowerPoint), ITS 12S S1 (Beginning Spreadsheets-Excel), ITS 12W S1 (Beginning Word Processing), ITS 14D S1 (Intermediate Database-Access), ITS 14S S1 (Intermediate Spreadsheets-Excel), ITS 14W S1 (Intermediate Word Processing) download - term referring to copying files to a storage device (see course handbook for specific instructions) drop form - form that needs to be completed and submitted to Records and Registration Office in order to withdraw from a course (fill in bottom section) flash drive - removable storage device that plugs into a USB port; can be purchased with varying amounts of storage capacity (also referred to as a jump drive, thumb drive, USB or memory stick) high density - type of 3 1/2" floppy computer disks that should be purchased; holds more data than double density disks, works better in the computers IP - stands for "in progress"; grade given at end of quarter of registration to students who have met their course requirement and wish to carry the course over into the following quarter jump drive - removable storage device that plugs into a USB port; can be purchased with varying amounts of storage capacity (also referred to as a flash drive, thumb drive, USB or memory stick) log in - refers to entering the user's password and username in order to access the Clark State network log out - refers to closing any open application programs and removing your username/password from the network (click Start on task bar at bottom of screen then select Log Off) memory stick - removable storage device that plugs into a USB port; can be purchased with varying amounts of storage capacity (also referred to as a flash drive, jump drive, USB or thumb drive) password - can either be the 7-digit System ID number located on a student schedule or a word that the student makes up proficiency - refers to testing out of a course by taking one test (must be paid for in advance in Cashiers Office); pass/fail grade; 70% or better is passing; contact the self-paced lab assistant to arrange to take the test at 937/328-7937 scantron - answer sheet used for tests in which bubbles are filled in to correspond to multiple choice and/or true-false answers storage devices - can be 3 1/2" floppy disks, zip disks, jump drives, or CDs on which computer files are stored syllabus - outline of course providing information on assignments, due dates, college policies, instructor information and policies system ID number - located on student schedule in upper right-hand corner; used to log in to Clark State network and for student identification TLC - Sara T. Landess Technology and Learning Center thumb drive - removable storage device that plugs into a USB port; can be purchased with varying amounts of storage capacity (also referred to as a jump drive, flash drive, USB or memory stick) traditional course - course that is offered in a classroom setting on campus taught by an instructor URL - Universal Resource Locator used by web browsers to locate web pages; web address USB (flash) drive - removable storage device that plugs into a USB port; can be purchased with varying amounts of storage capacity (also referred to as a jump drive, thumb drive, flash drive or memory stick) username - used to log in to the Clark State network and computer systems; composed of first five letters of student's last name followed by first initial followed by four numbers (smithj7890) W - grade given to indicate a withdrawal from a course
