Clark State to Host Plant Sale Benefitting Agriculture and Horticulture Club

The Clark State Community College Agriculture and Horticulture Club will host a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, April 18 in the Sara T. Landess Technology and Learning Center rotunda on the Springfield campus. The Clark State Plant Propagation class grew the plants in the Clark State greenhouse.
“We will have more than seven varieties of tomatoes and five varieties of pepper plants,” said Dr. Susan Everett, program coordinator and professor of Agribusiness, Horticulture, and Precision Agriculture at Clark State. “Herbs such as cilantro, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, dill, sage, basil and bronze fennel; annuals such as snapdragons, coleus, celosia and others; perennials such as lavender, delphiniums and black-eyed Susan’s; houseplants such as snake plants, spider plants, aloe, pepperomia and many others; plus a few surprises!”
The annual plant sale is open to the community, and plants will range in price from $1 - $5. Funds raised will benefit the Agriculture and Horticulture Club.
“The club members are deciding how to use the funds, but some ideas are for guest speakers, educational trips or recruiting trips to various high schools,” said Everett. “A portion of the money goes back into purchasing seeds, soil, pots, flats, etc. for the next plant sale.”
Everett said in addition to planting seeds, students also learn about hydroponics, micropropagation, grafting and budding, as well as starting plants from cuttings, division, layering and propagating bulbs.
“The students work very hard in the plant propagation class planting, transplanting and labeling plants,” said Everett. “But they truly enjoy the rewards of seeing the seeds germinate and the plants grow. Plant Propagation is always a favorite class!”
