Clark State Welcomes Alumni Arlie Ray as New Mental Health Counselor

January 18, 2022

With more than 11 years of experience in educational and private settings, Clark State College alumni, Arlie Ray has returned to serve students as a mental health counselor.

Ray said serving students has always given him a sense of fulfillment and working at a college will keep both his rehabilitation and mental health counseling skills sharp.

“After receiving my G.E.D I got my start right here at Clark State as a student in the Human Resource Management program,” said Ray.

Ray then went on to Antioch University where he received an undergraduate degree in Business Management, and then to Wright State where he earned a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling Degree.

“The ultimate goal is to provide students with the necessary mental health coping skills…I can better serve students by tempering their educations with a firm understanding of how to maintain their forward momentum after they leave college,” said Ray.

Ray’s experience includes: Safe Space training working with the LGBTQIA+ community; background in Trauma-Informed Care, including sexual assault and rape; and Crisis Counseling, including suicide prevention.

Ray said his abilities for problem solving, conflict resolution, multicultural communication, student-centered intake processes, confidentiality, and ethical best practices, align with the characteristics of an effective Mental Health counselor at Clark State.

“Arlie is a dedicated mental health counselor and certified rehabilitation counselor. He specializes in treating trauma survivors and helping individuals with mental health or developmental issues transition into the workforce,” said Melinda Van Noord, counseling coordinator at Clark State. “There is a growing need for mental health services and Arlie will help us meet our goal of increasing the availability of counseling at all college locations.”

The Clark State Counseling Center is available to help through confidential and professional services, peer support and assistance finding community resources. Licensed mental health counselors and a Peer Recovery Support Specialist are available to help students cope with stress and overcome barriers.

Counseling services are free and confidential (except in cases of a life-threatening situation).
Walk-in services are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments can be made at any Clark State location by calling the 937.328.7961.
