Central State University Choir to Perform During Black History Month

January 23, 2015

The Central State Choir will perform at the Clark State Performing Arts Center on Friday, February 6, 2015, at 8 p.m. as part of Clark State’s Black History Month celebration.

Corey Holliday, director of community outreach, said the free concert is a gift to the community. “The two (college) presidents came together for collaboration between the two schools, and the first thing they decided was to have the renowned Choir of CSU do a concert at the PAC,” said Holliday.

The Central State Choir first performed at the Performing Arts Center last year. This year, their performance will include 90-minutes of various musical selections. “Since it is during Black History month, selections will highlight the musical heritage of black Americans including spirituals, gospel, jazz and more,” said Adele Adkins, director of the Performing Arts Center. “The chorus will also present music from the classical genre and highlight the talent of music students at Central State University.”

Vocal music has played an essential role in the history of Central State University. Located in Wilberforce, Ohio, Central State University has served as a launching pad for many outstanding singers of international renown including Leontyne Price, Roberta Alexander and Nancy Wilson. The main chorus consists of more than 100 students from all academic disciplines and has a repertoire encompassing all periods and styles.

Holliday encourages the community to come and enjoy the experience that is the Central State choir. Approximately 1,000 people attended last year’s performance.

“This is a free show that is powerful and moving,” said Holliday. “They are awesome, and everyone will be in for a treat.”

For free tickets, call the PAC ticket office at (937) 328-3874 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Seating is reserved.
