Clark State Celebrates 62nd Annual Charter Night, Honoring Employees for Excellence and Service

February 28, 2024

Clark State College celebrated its 62nd Annual Charter Night Tuesday, February 27. Charter Night serves to remind the college and community about the establishment of Clark State’s charter in 1966 to operate as a post-secondary institution in the region.

The Charter Night theme of “I Am...” began with a creative project during Convocation this past summer. Student speakers Christopher Engle and Jessica Robbins shared their “I am” stories.

The Clark State College Board of Trustees elevated two retirees to Emeritus status; Kathleen Wilcox and Mary Murphy were recognized with this honor. To be considered for Emeritus status one must have achieved specific eligibility criteria.

The retirees selected as Emeriti have demonstrated dedicated service to Clark State and its students. The purpose of emeritus status is to acknowledge and recognize outstanding achievement among retired employees at Clark State, and these two individuals have made significant and measurable contributions to the institution that have impacted student success for years to come.

Wilcox was instrumental in expanding nursing programs, medical assisting program, the fire program, and the expansion of HHPS programs to the Bellefontaine and Beavercreek locations. Throughout her career at Clark State, Wilcox was appointed to several committees which she chaired and served, such as assessment, accreditation, and the search committees for both the VP of Academic Affairs and for the President.

Murphy served as secretary/receptionist when her career began with Clark State in 1993. She retired in 2016 as Human Resources Generalist after several promotions within the department. Following her retirement, Murphy returned to Clark State to assist in financial aid and human resources until 2020. Throughout her time at Clark State she was involved in Staff Senate, and several college events and committees. She was instrumental in the development of the Soul Food event, championing both diversity and excellence. In 2007, Mary was selected to represent Clark State at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity.

“The college is committed to recognizing individuals for their distinguished level of service to the college and the community, and Emeriti designations go beyond promotions and individual achievements,” said Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, president of Clark State. “Both Mary and Kathy embody a servant heart.”

Retired Springfield Police Chief Roger Evans was honored posthumously as a Champion of Clark State. Recipients of this award, established in 2015, are Champions of Clark State and the students; they serve as advocates for student success, support Clark State’s vision, mission and educational goals by continually helping to advance the College.

This award is only given when an individual rises to the level of excellence and selflessness in their dedication to Clark State. Evans was also honored as a Distinguished Alumni in 2019.

The last Champion Award recipient, Sharon Evans, was honored in 2019. Sharon Evans accepted the award on behalf of Chief Evans. She is currently serving as Vice Chair of the Clark State Board of Trustees. A scholarship will also be established in Chief Evans’ honor.

“Chief Roger Evans was the epitome of intelligence, grace, humility and humanity,” said Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, president of Clark State. “He sincerely championed Clark State’s Police Academy and our criminal justice program as Chief and after he retired.”

Academic professionals were also recognized at Charter Night. These professionals perform a wide range of critical functions for the college community and beyond. The Professional Excellence Award celebrates outstanding full-time faculty and staff, as well as adjunct faculty for their professional accomplishments, dedication and commitment to the College.
