Clark State Community College will recognize Black History Month with a February calendar full of events and opportunities for students and the community.
“The impact African Americans have made on this country is part of our collective consciousness,” said Ghislaine Tape, Clark State Diversity Committee co-chair. “Black History Month provides the chance to focus on different aspects of the nation’s narrative.”
As part of the annual Black History Month celebration, Clark State and Mercy Health-Springfield will host a third annual community dinner event on Thursday, February 21.
The theme of the event is “Mental Health in the Black Community” and will feature a panel of local health experts.
Topics will include mental health, suicide prevention, the relationship between mental health and drug addiction, as well as other related topics. Information on local community resources will also be provided.
The dinner event is free and open the public, although seating is limited.
“Clark State, in partnership with Mercy Health-Springfield, is again excited to host the Black History Month Dinner celebration,” said Dr. Theresa Felder, senior vice president of student success. “It is always a privilege to celebrate Black History Month with the community at this event.”
The event begins at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, February 21, and will be held at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street in Springfield. Reservations can be made by contacting Tracy Yates at 937-328-6066 or yatest@clarkstate.edu.

- Weekly Black History Quiz via e-mail to employees
- “Blind Date with a Book Contest,” featuring an eclectic ensemble of African American and non-African American books.
- Weekly Black History Trivia Question via e-mail to students. All respondents will be placed into a drawing at the end of the month for a chance to win one of five $20 Amazon gift cards.
- February 7: The movie “Black Panther” from 3 - 5 p.m. in Room 230 at the Greene Center in Beavercreek. Pizza/snacks will be provided. Students eligible to win one of five $20 Amazon gift cards.
- February 11: The movie “Loving” from 1 - 3 p.m. in Applied Science Center, Room 114 at the Leffel Lane Campus. Pizza/snacks will be provided. Students eligible to win one of five $20 Amazon gift cards.
- February 18: The movie “Fruitvale” from 1 - 3 p.m. in Room 232 at the Greene Center in Beavercreek. Pizza/snacks will be provided. Students eligible to win one of five $20 Amazon gift cards.
- February 21: Black History Celebration Dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center
- February 21: Bid Whist Tournament from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, Rooms 110 and 113
