Clark State Community College will recognize Black History Month with a February calendar full of events and opportunities for students and the community.
As part of the annual Black History Month celebration, Clark State and Mercy Health-Springfield will host a fourth annual community dinner event on Thursday, February 13.
The theme of this year’s event is: “The African Male Perspective: Careers and Health” and will feature a panel of local speakers.
“The topics will include stories from our speakers on their career pathways, how they overcame obstacles and resources in the community,” said Dr. Theresa Felder, senior vice president of student success at Clark State. “There will also be information on health concerns for males and how to address particular issues.”
The dinner event is free and open the public, although seating is limited. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street in Springfield. “Clark State is always excited and proud to celebrate Black History Month,” said Dr. Felder. “We invite the Springfield community to celebrate with us and participate in all our campus events.”
Additional Clark State Black History Month activities include:
- Wednesday, February 5 at 6 p.m.: “Catch the Mic” spoken word session presented by the Men of Clark State. Clark State students and the community are invited to share their work. This event will be held in the Eagle’s Nest on the Clark State’s campus on Leffel Lane in Springfield
- Thursday, February 13 from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.: A bid whist tournament for the community will be held at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street, Springfield.
- Thursday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m.: The Black History Month Dinner will be held at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street, Springfield.
- Sunday, February 16 at 5 p.m.: “Dance Stomp Shake” – a hip hop and black Greek Stroll competition for a $1,500 cash prize – will be held at the John Legend Theater, 700 South Limestone Street, Springfield.
- Thursday, February 27 from 1 - 3 p.m.: An African-American Read-In. Students select and read any text by an African-American author and discuss during the read-in. This event will be held in the Applied Science Center, Room 125 on Clark State’s campus on Leffel Lane in Springfield.
