Clark State Short-Term CNC Certificate Offers Gateway to Advanced Manufacturing

June 23, 2020

Clark State Community College students who complete the CNC Technical Operator short-term certificate are now able to apply their credit hours towards a certificate in the Advanced Manufacturing programs through Clark State’s prior learning assessment process. Enrollment for the program is now open.

“The CNC Technical Operator certification was originally created as an onsite training program for a local manufacturing partner,” said Lesli Beavers, director of Clark State’s Workforce and Business Solutions. “The training was such a success for both the partner and the students, we want to offer it in this open enrollment format to help all of our manufacturing partners.”

Beavers also said the training is perfect for workers who need to upskill or cross-train for advancement, new hires who need quick training and individuals looking to enter a manufacturing career.

The 80-hour, noncredit, CNC Technical Operator training gives students the foundation knowledge of manufacturing and CNC operations. Training includes an overview of the manufacturing process, including machine tool operations, CNC setup and operation and setup and operation of manual metal lathe, mill, drill press and band saw for completion of lathe and milling projects.

“This program is open to all--there are no prerequisites to enter the entry-level training,” said Beavers. “This training is designed to prepare and pathway individuals into a manufacturing certificate or degree program, to prepare individuals to enter the workforce pipeline or both.”

Beavers said for Clark State’s manufacturing partners, this program is pre-approved and eligible for TechCred reimbursement funding.

“This means they can send incumbent workers or new hires through this training for little to no cost once individuals have achieved their completion certificates,” she said. “This program also includes the NIMS measurement, materials and safety industry recognized credential, covered in the cost, which is another valuable tool for employees to have.”

Clark State is at the ready to assist with applications for the fourth round of TechCred funding announced by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and his administration on May 28. The TechCred program is designed to train incumbent workers for in-demand jobs in Ohio. Applications for the fourth round of TechCred funding are due June 30.

The next CNC Technical Operator certification will begin on July 13 with a completion date of August 7, 2020. Classes are held from 1 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
