Clark State to Hold 10th Volley for the Cure, Raise Monies for Breast Cancer Endowment Fund

October 17, 2017

Clark State Community College will host the 10th annual Volley for the Cure on Wednesday, October 18 in the gymnasium on the Leffel Lane campus in Springfield.

“We’re proud to come together as a community and raise money and awareness for breast cancer research," said Nina Wiley, Volley for the Cure coordinator and dean of student engagement and support services for Clark State.

Teams from Clark State, Bobby Fisher Distributing and Assurant will participate in Volley for the Cure. All monies raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County.

“We really like to be involved with our community and do different things to help,” said Brandy Underwood, functional associate with Assurant. “We think it’s a great way for our employees to get active in the community for a great cause.”

Kohl’s Department Store has donated $1,500 to be used as three $500 scholarships for qualified students affected by cancer. Bobby Fisher Distributing in Springfield has participated in Volley for the Cure since its inception in 2008 and has two teams participating in the volleyball games this year.

“It’s a great team building experience, we are big supporters of all kinds of cancer research and we want to give to the cause here,” said Maria Coleman, vice president for Bobby Fisher Distributing. “It’s an all-around awesome event that allows people of all ages to come together and support the cause to find a cure.”

Graphic Design student Kat Brelje designed this year’s event t-shirt; the banners and posters were created by students Alex Gueth and Andrew Hohler. Berner Screen Print printed the shirts, and $1 per shirt was donated to the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County.

“The students are recognized for their design work,” said Wiley. “It’s great having them involved.”

Wiley encourages family, friends and the community to come watch the volleyball games and participate in the event. Last year, Clark State raised close to $1,200 for Volley for the Cure. Overall, Clark State has raised $4,663.63 for breast cancer research and awareness since 2008.

“I am so proud of how this event has grown and the money and awareness that we raise; it brings the community together to support the cause,” said Wiley. “It’s an energetic event that is so much fun, but also provides a good cause for our community.”

The winning volleyball team will be recognized with a reward from Clark State. Additional activities include face painting, pumpkin painting, concessions, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. The event is free and open to the public. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m.
