Clark State to Host 20th Soul Food Sampling

February 23, 2015

Clark State Community College will host the 20th annual Soul Food Sampling event on Thursday, February 26, as part of the College’s Black History Month celebration.

“It was started as a Black History Month event to showcase the cooking of different soul food from people at the College and in the community,” said Corey Holliday, director of community outreach for Clark State.

Holliday said the Soul Food Sampling is one of the largest events offered by Clark State, and people from “all walks of life” attend the event; as many as 300 people have attended the Soul Food Sampling in past years.

Former Ms. Black Ohio Tracey Sigers will be the featured speaker at the popular event. Sigers, a native of Ohio, is a transformational motivational speaker and affiliate professor for Ohio Christian University.

“We have a solo by Tyisha Short, a Clark State alumnus, and a lyric dance by Lydia Tanyhill of Springfield,” said Holliday. Tanyhill was accepted into the elite The Rock School for Dance Summer Intensive Program in Philadelphia.

The Soul Food Sampling will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street in downtown Springfield. The event is open to the community.

“I strongly encourage folks to come to the event and have some great food,” said Holliday. “I know everyone will have a good evening.”
