Clark State to Host “Below 100” Officer Training

February 10, 2015

Clark State Community College will host “Below 100” training for local law enforcement officers on Tuesday, February 24 in LRC Rooms 207-209 on the Springfield campus, 570 East Leffel Lane. Two four-hour sessions will be offered beginning at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The mission and purpose of “Below 100” is to reduce the number of line-of-duty police officer deaths to less than 100 per year. The last time the number of line-of-duty deaths was below 100 was in 1943. On average over the last ten years, more than 150 officers have died each year in the line of duty.

“In view of current events, this training is very timely,” said Thomas Drerup, associate professor and criminal justice program coordinator for Clark State.

The course is designed to instill basic safety measures in the forefront of officers’ minds; it is also geared towards risk management and protection not only of the officer’s lives, but also the general public. The five safety tenants include:

  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Wear your vest
  • Watch your speed
  • WIN: What’s Important Now?
  • Remember: Complacency kills!

“All law enforcement officers in Ohio are required to get continuing education,” said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly. “This course will meet that requirement.” Kelly said each session can accommodate up to 100 officers.

Clark State students are invited to sit-in on the course. “Whether this will count as an assignment for the students will depend upon their individual instructors,” said Drerup.

The “Below 100” course is sponsored by Nationwide Insurance and is taught by law enforcement professionals. There is no cost to attend. For more information or to register a name and agency, contact Sergeant Elliott at the Clark County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 521-2076.
