Clark State to Offer New Summer Manufacturing Camp

May 9, 2019

Clark State Community College in partnership with Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs (NBT) will offer a summer manufacturing camp for students ages 12 through 16.

Clark State received $2,500 from NBT to start a summer manufacturing camp. Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs is the charitable foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturing Association, International (FMA). NBT’s purpose is to support individuals in discovering their interest in manufacturing and to encourage the pursuit of a manufacturing career.

The camp will be offered June 3 – 7 at Clark State’s Springfield campus on Leffel Lane. Space is limited to 12 students and is free of charge.

“Local manufacturing companies KK Tools and Yamada North America have graciously covered the cost of the registration fee for each student,” said Nora Hatem, program coordinator and associate professor for Engineering Technologies, who will be facilitating the camp along with instructor Jason Chilman. “The camp will focus around the manufacturing process.”

Hatem said students will learn to use 3D modeling software to design and print a TIC-TAC-TOE board and pegs. “Students will then have the option to machine a metal version of the board and program a robot to ‘play’ a game of TIC-TAC-TOE,” she said. “Students will get to take all of the projects they create home with them.”

Students will utilize 3D modeling software, 3D printing/additive manufacturing, manual mill, manual lathe, robotics, CNC mill, CNC lathe, CAD/CAM and artistic design skills for hands-on activities, including the creation of a product from start to finish using manufacturing techniques and equipment.

Local manufacturers will also give presentations, and camp participants will visit local manufacturing facilities.

Applications are due no later than May 15. For more information contact Crystal Jones at 937.328.6466 or jonesc@clarkstate.edu.
