Clark County high school students participating in the Johns Hopkins Engineering Innovation Program at Clark State Community College will welcome the bomb squads from the Dayton Police Department and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for a demonstration at 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 19 on the Leffel Lane campus in Springfield.

“The bomb squad is a force of officers trained to disarm explosive devices in the case of a bomb threat,” said Kanesha Hall, STEM programming manager for Clark State. “This will be the first time that a presentation will be given by WPAFB EOD professionals and Dayton Police Department bomb squad to Engineering Innovation Program students.”

The Dayton Police Department bomb squad will present on the application of electrical and robotic engineering to law enforcement from a civilian service perspective. A staff sergeant and senior airman, highly experienced in robotics and EOD (explosive ordnance disposal), will represent the bomb squad from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and focus on a military perspective.

“Since the Engineering Innovation course includes abstract examples of robotics, the instructors decided a concrete example of robotics would aid the students’ learning,” said Hall. “Spectators and students should expect to see and experience the strategies and problem-solving used to understand and disable explosives with robotic engineering.”
