Johns Hopkins Youth Programs Prepare for Debut at Clark State

May 28, 2015

Johns Hopkins University will present two youth programs for esteemed high school and middle school students in Clark County. The summer programs being held at Clark State Community College in Springfield, both quickly reached maximum capacity.

“This summer will be an exciting and busy one for Clark State Community College’s community outreach and youth programs,” said Kanesha Hall, STEM programming manager. “This is the first time Johns Hopkins University has held youth programs in Ohio.”

Recruitment for the two programs, Engineering Innovation and Phone & Games, began in February. Students accepted into the programs had to meet specific requirements including grade point average and also acquire teacher recommendations. “Because of the generosity of local donor Rosalyn R. Bullock, students will be able to attend the programs at no cost,” said Kristin Culp, vice president of advancement at Clark State. “The programs will be held on Clark State’s Leffel Lane campus in a brand new state-of-the-art facility.”

Hall said students enrolled in Engineering Innovation will collaborate in small groups to master several labs performed by Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering students. “All 24 high-performing high school students have the opportunity to earn three transferable college credits at the conclusion of the program,” she said. Engineering Innovation begins June 29 and concludes July 24.

The Phone & Games middle school program will make its debut at Clark State on July 13. It concludes July 17. “Computer coding and app creation are the focus of the Phone & Games program,” said Hall. “The 24 students will design an app for an Android device while working in pairs under the instruction of Johns Hopkins’ Middle School Program Manager Margaret Hart.”

A STEM program open house will be held at 5 p.m., June 3 in Rhodes Hall on Clark State’s Leffel Lane Campus. Students participating in the Johns Hopkins programs, and their families, are invited to meet Hall, Clark State Admission Specialist Josh Foster, Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin and Johns Hopkins teaching fellows. Light refreshments will be served and guests are encouraged to tour the new student academic support center in Rhodes Hall following a brief orientation.

Hall said there is currently a waiting list for Engineering Innovation and Phone & Games. In the event of a student canceling, a waitlisted student will be added to the program. “I would also recommend the summer science and math opportunities available through Clark State’s College for Kids program,” said Hall. Class options and registration information are available online.
