New pathway opens College Credit Plus, engineering careers to more students
More high school students can now earn free college credit and prepare for careers in advanced manufacturing and engineering technology through a new College Credit Plus pathway at Clark State College: The Innovative Waiver Pathway in Engineering Technology and Advanced Manufacturing. The new option allows high school students who may not meet traditional College Credit Plus requirements to enroll in college engineering and manufacturing courses, earn industry-recognized credentials and receive both high school and college credit while preparing for some of Ohio’s most in-demand careers.
The Ohio Department of Higher Education approved the pathway through the 2027-28 academic year.
“Through the pathway, students can enroll in introductory engineering technology and advanced manufacturing courses and begin building credentials that lead to in-demand careers,” said Adam Parrillo, Ph.D., dean of business and applied technology at Clark State. “Students may begin with short-term certificates and industry-recognized credentials and continue seamlessly into Clark State’s associate and bachelor’s degree pathways in engineering and manufacturing, including robotics, automation, welding, modeling and simulation and manufacturing technology management. By earning college credit while still in high school, students can save time, reduce the overall cost of education and move more quickly into rewarding careers that are locally in high-demand and high-paying.”
To implement the pathway, Clark State collaborated with regional employers including McGregor Metal, Rittal Corp. and QQE to ensure students gain the skills and experiences employers value most. Through their ongoing involvement, students will have opportunities to tour manufacturing facilities, engage with industry professionals, participate in workplace learning experiences, explore internships and gain first-hand exposure to careers that are critical to Ohio's economy.
“Today’s students are looking for affordable, meaningful pathways to great careers, and employers are looking for skilled talent,” said Travis Binkley, assistant vice president of enrollment services at Clark State. “Students don’t have to wait until after high school to begin preparing for their future. Students who may not qualify for traditional College Credit Plus participation now have an opportunity to begin earning college credit and exploring manufacturing and engineering careers. By expanding access, we're helping more students discover their potential and prepare for successful futures, and we’re helping employers connect with the next generation of talent.”
Students interested in these programs can enroll now for fall semester classes, which begin Aug. 17. Classes are held at Clark State’s Springfield and Beavercreek locations. Scholarships and financial aid are available to help students further reduce the cost of earning a college credential or degree.
