Academic Engagement Program

Life happens. At Clark State, we know grades are affected by more than academics. We also believe a grade does not define intelligence or potential. It simply reflects a moment in time — and moments can change, especially when students face life challenges such as housing, finances, health, transportation difficulty, loss and grief, work obligations, family responsibilities or childcare.

That’s where Clark State’s Academic Engagement Program comes in to help students stay on a path to success. Clark State reviews student grades, grade point averages and academic progress each semester. When progress is off-track, students are connected with AEP and paired with an engagement specialist, a staff member who works one-on-one with them to focus is on real-life solutions and long-term success by:

  • Listening to understand what is affecting their success
  • Assisting in study and time-management habits
  • Connecting with tutoring, advising or campus services
  • Identifying community resources to assist
  • Creating a realistic plan to get back on track academically.

What Happens if You Join AEP?
If you enter AEP, here is what to expect:

  1. You’ll receive notice that your academic standing needs improvement.
  2. An advisor helps you plan your schedule and connects you with an Engagement Specialist.
  3. You complete a short AEP orientation and discuss your needs.
  4. Each week, you receive tips and check in about your progress.
  5. If you’re enrolled in classes, you’ll also be added to AEP-0001, a no-cost, no-credit support course that helps track progress.
  6. Completing engagement activities helps show progress and may help if future academic decisions are needed.
  7. If placed on Academic Pause, you may appeal and share your situation.
  8. Even during a pause, you can continue working with staff to prepare for your return.
