Why do we call this a “read-in”?
We call this a “read-in” rather than a “read-out” to honor the Greensboro sit-ins during 1960’s civil rights protest. Young African-American students staged a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter of a local restaurant. They refused to leave after being denied service due to the color of their skin, leading to many of their arrests. Their courage spread to more college towns throughout the south – reiterating what we know is the truth: separate is not equal.
