Clark State and Springfield Promise Neighborhood to Host College Connect Event

Clark State and Springfield Promise Neighborhood to Host College Connect Event

April 8, 2022

Clark State College, in collaboration with Springfield Promise Neighborhood, will welcome high school juniors and seniors to Clark State’s main campus in Springfield for College Connect.

College Connect will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 9. This free event hosted by Clark State Student Affairs is designed to help students prepare for college. This is a hands-on experience where each family will have a representative assist with the process.

“The importance of family is evident in the college going process. At every point through the college journey, students acknowledge the importance of family,” said Dr. Dawayne Kirkman, vice president of student affairs at Clark State. “This can be seen in a student’s college selection process, in advice about their future career, and the encouragement given to help them persist through graduation.”

Kirkman said Clark State leaders will share information for students and their families regarding steps of enrollment, and assistance with college essays and financial aid.

Andrew Buckles, Youth Development VISTA for Springfield Promise Neighborhood, said one of Springfield Promise Neighborhood's essential functions is to provide healthy and informative opportunities to students and families through Family Connect Events.

“We decided to focus April's event on the needs of the youth that are getting ready for one of their biggest educational transitions: from high school to college,” he said. “This event serves the need for guidance during this exciting time, as students tackle the two biggest hurdles: the FAFSA (federal financial aid) form and the college application essay. We want our Family Connect event to help prepare, inform, and most importantly, reassure our families that these hurdles are not as high as we tend to believe. We want to support our schools’ guidance counselors and secondary teachers by providing another outlet for information sharing and encouragement to students to achieve that next step for career readiness and success.”
