Clark State Basic Peace Officer Training Academy Accepting Applications

May 12, 2020

The Clark State Community College Basic Peace Officer Training Academy is accepting applications for the next session of evening classes beginning on June 6.

“There are no virtual classes in the police academy due to the type of topics and hands-on training needed throughout the academy,” said Paul Weber, commander of the Clark State Police Academy. “We will conduct the classes as required by the State Health Department guidelines set forth for the COVID-19 pandemic. Cadets will wear masks, and classrooms will be sanitized daily by Clark State personnel. The cadet seating will also be within the guidelines of six feet.”

Applications for the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy are required in person. For more information, interested students should contact Commander Paul Weber as soon as possible at (937) 328-6050 or weberp@clarkstate.edu.

The applicant must compete the following items:

  • A physical (personal physician, Urgent Care or at the Mercy Health Clinic on North Fountain Boulevard, Springfield)
  • An online background check (finger printing) at the Clark County Sheriff's Department east side station.
  • A drug test at the Mercy Health Clinic (approximate cost is $42)
  • A physical fitness assessment held at the academy.

Clark State’s state-of-the-art police academy training facility features a subject control/physical fitness center. A new practical training room is used for practical (hands-on) training for domestic violence, crime scene, DUI enforcement training and Milo System training (weapons scenario-based system to train officers in the use of force).

The Clark State Police Academy entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Springfield Police Division (SPD) in the spring of 2018. It established a joint mission to better train future candidates of the Springfield Police Division, Criminal Justice students and current police officers. The cooperative effort aims to give the Springfield community the most current training for police officers and provide excellent training opportunities to students.

Graduation is based on successful completion of OPOTA’s requirements. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the state certification exam. Successful completion of the exam allows students to obtain a position in law enforcement.

Clark State celebrated 50 years of the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy in 2019.
