The Clark State Community College Police Academy will donate an ambulance to the Box 27 Associates volunteer organization in Springfield, Ohio.

“Clark State utilized the ambulance for many years. Now it’s time to transfer the ambulance to Box 27 who will benefit even more from this type of vehicle,” said Paul Weber, Police Academy commander at Clark State. “The ambulance is the type of vehicle that can assist the Springfield Fire Division and Springfield Police Division on scene at critical incidents.”

Box 27 is a non-profit, volunteer organization of men and women who provide direct support to the Springfield Fire Division and Springfield Police Division. Support includes an on-scene air truck, which is currently a former ladder truck that has been remodeled.

Dale Crist, chairman of Box 27, said the organization needs to downsize the air truck unit. Crist said the ambulance from Clark State will be remodeled to serve as a new air truck and is expected to be “on scene” by 2018. “I think this is a great thing,” said Crist. “Right now, when we arrive on the scene, people think we are part of the fire division and don’t know we are volunteers.”

The Box 27 air truck also provides lights, water, Gator-aid and food to police and firefighters when they are on the scene of a crime or fire.

Springfield Fire Chief Nick Heimlich and Battalion Chief Matt Smith, who is also a Clark State adjunct faculty member, will be present for the donation. The donation ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 5 in parking lot G near the Applied Science Center at Clark State Community College, 570 East Leffel Lane in Springfield.
