Clark State Offers More than 60 Online Certificates, Still Time to Apply for TechCred Funding

March 27, 2020

Clark State Community College has identified more than 60 online programs eligible for the Ohio TechCred program which was unveiled by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and his administration last September. The Ohio TechCred program is designed to train incumbent workers for in-demand jobs in Ohio.

In light of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s stay-at-home directive to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Clark State - along with other higher education institutions - was asked to identify virtual (online only) TechCred options available for employers.

Clark State currently offers certificates that align with the TechCred program in the areas of healthcare, information technology, manufacturing and business technology. Many of the certificate programs can also serve as stepping-stones for those looking to later pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree.

“We are very excited that we were able to identify over 60 TechCred approved certificates and credentials that can be completed entirely online,” said Lesli Beavers, director of workforce and business solutions at Clark State. “We have identified programs in several sectors, from Microsoft certifications to cybersecurity credentials, and many more that we hope our business and industry partners will find valuable.”

Beavers said offering these programs online gives industry partners the flexibility to start and access these trainings from any location, whether during remote work or from the office. “We hope everyone continues to see the value in providing training and upskilling to their employees, as the State continues to support the value through the TechCred reimbursement funding.”

Ohio Lt. Governor Husted said in a statement last month that momentum for TechCred is growing with Ohio businesses as job creators seek to upskill their employees.

Local businesses can begin the Ohio TechCred process by identifying skills needs and employees and connecting with Clark State. Applications for the initial program are available online at https://techcred.ohio.gov through March 31. Clark State is available to assist with applications.

Employers will be reimbursed for tuition, lab fees, manuals, textbooks and certification costs up to $2,000 per credential and $30,000 total per funding round. TechCred can be used to train both current and prospective employees. The employer is also able to train employees during layoff or furlough periods and be reimbursed, as long as the employee is on payroll when the employer requests reimbursement.

“We want to remind everyone that there are several additional credentials available outside of TechCred,” said Aimee Belanger-Haas, dean of business and applied technologies at Clark State. “But we want to encourage businesses to save a little money and use the programs listed to help offset costs.”
