Clark State Community College will offer Train-the-Trainer; a 28-hour program that will prepare qualified registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN) to teach and coordinate nurse aide training programs in Ohio.
“We are offering the Train-the-Trainer course this fall because there is a demand for State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNAs) in our state and a demand for qualified instructors for STNA courses,” said Dr. Rhoda Sommers, dean of health, human and public services at Clark State.
Those interested in the Train-the-Trainer program must provide documentation and verification of a registered or practical nursing license in the State of Ohio.
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Explain the history and purpose of the Nurse Aide Training Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP).
- Differentiate the requirements for a facility based vs. non-facility based Nurse Aide Training Program.
- Apply the Ohio Standards to the development of a 75-hour Training Competency Evaluation Program (TCEP).
- Recognize the diverse population of nurse aide trainees in relation to background, education, age, learning styles and stressors.
- Identify methods to enhance learning through the physical environment, layout and presentation of the classroom and the use of audio-visual aids.
- Identify teaching methods and requirements to prepare the nurse aide trainee for the TCE state test.
- Describe how the needs of the community and/or facility may impact the content and presentation of the NATCEP.
- Create measurable performance and behavioral objectives.
- Discuss ways to create a successful skills practice and clinical experience.
- Present learning activities on NATCEP topics within an allotted time frame.
- Locate and interpret standards in the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC).
“Both Clark State and other facilities in our area are constantly searching for LPNs or RNs who have worked for at least two years in a long-term care facility to take the Train-the-Trainer course which is required by the Ohio Department of Health to teach STNA courses,” said Sommers. “Clark State will reimburse individuals for taking the Train-the-Trainer course if they also teach STNA courses for us in the next few semesters.”
Train-the-Trainer will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., November 7, 14, 21 and December 5 in the Sara T. Landess Technology and Learning Center, Room 160 located on the main campus at 570 East Leffel Lane, Springfield. The cost is $249 and includes all materials. Class size is limited to 10 students. Attendance is required all four days to receive certificate of completion.

The Train-The-Trainer program has been approved by the Ohio Department of Health and meets all required standards of the Ohio Administrative Code and the Ohio Revised Code. COVID-19 safety protocols are in place at all Clark State campus locations. Face coverings are required.
