Alpha Nu Lambda, Clark State Community College’s chapter of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), will hold a fall induction ceremony at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 20 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield.
More than 50 Clark State students will be inducted into the organization. The Clark State Alpha Nu Lambda chapter was ranked No.7 in the state; jumping three spots from last year.
“Our induction ceremony is a time to recognize the academic accomplishments of our students,” said Nina Wiley, dean of student engagement and support services for Clark State. “We are proud to offer opportunities for our Phi Theta Kappa members to gain valuable leadership skills, participate in community service efforts and work together on a meaningful college project.”
Wiley said the purpose of the PTK College Project is to establish a supportive relationship between Clark State’s PTK chapter - Alpha Nu Lambda - and College administration. “Students decided to focus their project on uplifting the Office of Student Support,” she said.
This year’s PTK project is: Operation Support, Engage and Empower. There are three components to the project:
- Everlasting Message: A wall of inspiration inside the Office of Student Support. Starting November 18, students, faculty and staff can write positive, uplifting messages in permanent markers on the wall. “Words can be powerful,” said Wiley. “We encourage our campus community to stop by and make their mark.”
- Food and Hygiene Supply Drive: PTK students collected grab and go food and hygiene product donations to help meet the needs of students at all Clark State campuses. “The food items for the donation drive are to meet the immediate needs of students while on campus,” said Wiley.
- Mentoring: PTK students are in the developing stages of creating a peer-to-peer mentoring program for students who access the Office of Student Support. “Our students have varying experiences and backgrounds that can help other students work through barriers and challenges,” Wiley said. “Through this mentoring program, PTK students hope to improve student success and retention, build meaningful relationships and help fellow students meet their academic goals.”
To be an eligible candidate for PTK, students must have completed at least 12 college-level credit hours and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. Students pay a one-time fee of $80 for a lifetime membership. Membership benefits include scholarships; free access to Five Star Competitive Edge, a personal and professional development plan for building marketable skills and an online portfolio; increased pay grade for entry-level federal jobs; tuition discounts; and more.
Established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada and Germany. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
