Clark State Community College continues its health and wellness initiatives in October – breast cancer awareness month – by hosting its 12th annual Volley for the Cure.
Volley for the Cure will be held on Wednesday, October 16 in the gymnasium on the Clark State Leffel Lane campus in Springfield.
“One hundred percent of the funds raised will be used to provide financial assistance to women of Clark and Champaign counties who do not have the resources necessary to ensure breast health or cope with breast cancer,” said Nina Wiley, Volley for the Cure coordinator and dean of student engagement and support services for Clark State.
Wiley said the event raised $1,385.50 in 2018. All monies went directly to the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County. Overall, Clark State has raised $7,387.13 for breast cancer research and awareness since 2008.
Teams from Clark State, Bobby Fisher Distributing and Assurant will participate in Volley for the Cure. Wiley encourages family, friends and the community to come watch the volleyball games and participate in the event.
Gretta Runyan co-founded the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County in 1995 and is a 33-year breast cancer survivor.
“The mission of the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund is to provide financial and emotional support to women in Clark and Champaign counties who have received a diagnosis,” said Gretta Runyan. “As a 33-year survivor, I understand how important that support can be! For the past 11 years, Clark State has provided needed financial support to the BCEF. Because of their commitment, more patients will be helped.”
The winning volleyball team will be recognized with an award from Clark State. Additional activities include face painting, pumpkin painting, concessions, a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction. The event is free and open to the public. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m.
“We are proud to partner with the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County and to help support the financial assistance offered to survivors,” said Wiley.
Clark State will also host the Mercy Health Mobile Mammography unit on Monday, November 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the main campus in Springfield in front the Sara T. Landess Technology and Learning Center.

Clients should contact their insurance company regarding 3D coverage, as not all companies provide this service. There are several options for financial assistance. Walk-ins are welcome, but should allow for 45 minutes to complete registration, paperwork and imaging. Clients need to bring a photo ID and insurance card.
