Registration for Clark State Community College’s College for Kids is now open. Students entering kindergarten through eighth grade can select from a variety of summer classes beginning the week of June 15.

Beth Dixon, director of Youth Programming at Clark State said this year the program is aimed at getting students to start thinking ahead about higher education. “We’re trying to get kids to think about college programs, such as theatre arts, graphic design and new media as areas of study,” she said.

Graphic Design students at Clark State had the opportunity to design the cover for the College for Kids brochure. “It is generous of the college administration and the Marketing Office to give our students these real world learning opportunities and help our students develop as professionals,” said Scott Dawson, faculty coordinator of Digital Media.

College for Kids offers 25 class opportunities, each developed with student enrichment in mind. The five-week schedule consists of different programs each week. The activities provide opportunities for students to explore new areas of interest, stretch their imagination or cultivate a special interest. All activities are conducted in a non-graded environment where personal growth and development is encouraged.

Depending on the course and planned activities, classes begin at $55 per student and go up to no more than $165 for courses like “High Adventure Camp” where students will experience outdoor adventures including archery, fishing, river seining, hiking, orienteering, high and low ropes, climbing walls and zip lines.

All classes are available on a first come, first served basis, and class sizes are limited. Dixon said they hope to have the classes filled by June 1, and she encourages interested students to register as soon as possible. “Register now, and don’t wait,” she said. “Once the classes are full, we won’t be able to add more students.”

“We want the community to know that there are great things happening at Clark State and in higher education in these area. It’s never too early for kids to be thinking about their future and what they want to study and where they want to study,” said Dixon. “We want kids to feel like Clark State is their home even as early as in kindergarten.”
