RENT Brings Music, Affordability to Clark State Performing Arts Center

November 7, 2016

Clark State Community College welcomes the highly-acclaimed Broadway musical RENT to the Performing Arts Center for one night only as part of the show’s 20th Anniversary Tour.

RENT, an original rock musical composed by Johnathan Larson, opened in 1996 and has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®.

“RENT forever changed the landscape of musical theatre,” said Adele Adkins, executive director of the Clark State Performing Arts Center. “The subject of people–artists–struggling to follow their dreams without selling out is just as relevant today as 20 years ago.”

RENT is a re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

The producers of RENT want the show to be affordable for all to enjoy; they began the tradition of $20 tickets in 1996 in New York when the show moved to Broadway after a sold-out run in a small downtown theatre. The producers are committed to continuing the tradition of offering the first two rows of seats for $20 in each city where they perform. The $20 tickets will be available two hours before the performance (5:30 p.m.), cash only and limited to two per person.

Tickets for RENT are available at ticketmaster.com. The show begins at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, at the Clark State Performing Arts Center, 300 South Fountain Avenue, Springfield.
