Clark State Community College will host a graduation ceremony for 26 Aspire students on Thursday, July 19 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center. Nine English as a Second Language (ESOL) students will also be recognized for their English language growth. Clark State’s Aspire programs are designed to help students achieve their goals through free career exploration, education and training.

Volunteer work at the Clark State Performing Arts Center (PAC) has never been more rewarding. New this year, 19 PAC volunteers were awarded a scholarship worth three college credit hours at Clark State Community College. PAC volunteers work as ushers and floor managers during scheduled performances. Responsibilities include ticket scanning, ushering, greeting, directing patrons to the correct door to enter the auditorium for their seat location, coat check and assisting with special needs.

Clark State Community College has announced the names of students who achieved the 2018 Spring Semester Dean's List. Two hundred seventy-six (276) full-time students (those taking 12 or more credit hours) and nine hundred sixty-nine (969) part-time students (those taking 6-11 credit hours) earned a 3.5 grade point average or better to receive dean's list honors.

Renovations are officially under way in Rhodes Hall on the main campus of Clark State Community College in Springfield. Clark State received $2.6 million for the renovation from the Higher Education Improvement Fund of the Ohio State Capital Bill passed by the House and Senate earlier this year. A total of 48,000 square feet will be renovated. The last facilities update to Rhodes Hall was in the mid-90s.

Clark State Community College has received official approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) for its first applied baccalaureate degree. The four-year degree in Manufacturing Technology Management will be available to students beginning in the fall semester of 2019. An applied baccalaureate degree in Manufacturing Technology Management from Clark State will prepare incumbent workers in the manufacturing industry or those interested in pursuing a career in manufacturing to acquire both technical and supervisory skills that will result in a well-paying job in the region.

Clark State Community College is currently accepting registrations for the 2018 College for Kids and Teens summer programming. College for Kids and Teens offers more than ten class and day camp opportunities, each developed for student enrichment. The five-week schedule consists of different programs each week. The activities provide opportunities for students to explore new areas of interest, stretch their imagination or cultivate a skill.

Dr. Theresa Felder, vice president of student affairs and Greene Center operations for Clark State Community College has been promoted to senior vice president for student success. Effective May 25, Felder will have responsibility for guiding the newly revised strategic plan in addition to leading and managing all of operations for student affairs. Felder will be based out of the Clark State campus in Springfield but will continue to oversee student services at all Clark State campuses.

Jim Witter will return to the Clark State Performing Arts Center for the eighth consecutive year as headliner of the Richard and Barbara Kuss Memorial Concert. Witter’s show will begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 and feature “The Long and Winding Road - The Music of Lennon and McCartney” and the stories behind the songs.

Clark State Community College has appointed Larry Wakefield to the position of vice president of business affairs. Wakefield has served twice as interim vice president of business affairs for Clark State since December of 2016. Wakefield grew up and attended college in Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent most of his career in financial management positions at public universities in Tennessee and Georgia, and retired in September 2016 after ten years as vice president for fiscal affairs at Albany State University in Georgia.

The second class of Clark State Community College SOAR participants will begin their mentorship under the guidance of Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin this fall. SOAR–Serving Our Own through Leadership and Retention–was developed in order to facilitate mentoring of faculty and staff on campus and assist them in identifying current and future leadership opportunities that will result in personal and professional growth.

Clark State Community College will celebrate commencement with two ceremonies on Saturday, May 12 at the Clark State Performing Arts Center in downtown Springfield. The Clark State Class of 2018 features 660 candidates for graduation who will receive their degree or certificate of completion. Graduate Kelita Evans will speak at the first commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and Katherine Godfrey, a junior at Tecumseh High School, will be the commencement speaker for the second ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Clark State alumni Randy Kapp and Johnne Heard will receive the inaugural Alumni Awards.

The Clark State Community College – Springfield Regional School of Nursing will hold pinning ceremonies for 122 graduating nurses who have completed their programs of study. The pinning ceremony for the Practical Nursing students will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 10; 35 Practical Nursing students will be conferred at this ceremony. The pinning ceremony for Registered Nursing students will be held 6 p.m., Friday, May 11; 87 Registered Nursing students will be conferred at this ceremony. Both ceremonies will be held at the Clark State Performing Arts Center in downtown Springfield.

Clark State Community College will welcome Dr. Michael Brown to the interim position of vice president for academic affairs (VPAA). Dr. Brown has served as interim VPAA at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, CT. Prior to that position, he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at North Carolina Wesleyan. Brown will begin his service to Clark State on May 7. He will lead in this position until a permanent vice president of academic affairs is named.

Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, president of Clark State Community College, has been elected to the American Association of Community College (AACC) Board of Directors and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Board of Trustees. The AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges. Blondin’s term with the AACC Board will begin on July 1 and continue through June 30, 2021. The HLC accredits colleges and universities in a 19-state region of the United States. Her four-year HLC Board term will begin September 1 of this year.

Student Recognition Night is an annual event recognizing and celebrating outstanding students. The keynote speaker was Katy Cardoza. Faculty, staff and student organization advisors nominated outstanding students in their programs.

Clark State Community College has been presented with the 2018 American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) CEO/Board Relationship Award of Excellence. The AACC Excellence Awards recognize exceptional work among the nation’s two-year colleges. Clark State was nominated for the award by several professional organizations and individuals including Jack Hershey, president and CEO of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges. The AACC reported that the Clark State Board of Trustees demonstrates an unwavering commitment to students and adheres to a strong shared governance model that encourages input from faculty, staff and student leaders.

Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T) has awarded Clark State Community College the designation of a Top School in its 2018 MAE&T Guide to Colleges & Universities, measuring best practices in military and veteran education. MAE&T's 2018 Guide to Colleges & Universities arms students with information about institutions that go above and beyond to give back to servicemen and women. This year, institutions were evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, general support, on-campus support and online support services.

Clark State Community College students have seen the new light, and it is LED! The College recently teamed up with Energy Optimizers to install new LED lighting throughout Shull Hall on the Springfield campus. The installation of the new lighting will save Clark State on electrical costs, operations and maintenance. Expected annual savings is more than $9,000. The LED lighting system has a life expectancy of more than 20 years.
