Clark State Announces Second Class of SOAR Program Participants

The second class of Clark State Community College SOAR participants will begin their mentorship under the guidance of Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin this fall. SOAR–Serving Our Own through Leadership and Retention–was developed in order to facilitate mentoring of faculty and staff on campus and assist them in identifying current and future leadership opportunities that will result in personal and professional growth.

Clark State to Celebrate Commencement with Two Ceremonies on Saturday, May 12

Clark State Community College will celebrate commencement with two ceremonies on Saturday, May 12 at the Clark State Performing Arts Center in downtown Springfield. The Clark State Class of 2018 features 660 candidates for graduation who will receive their degree or certificate of completion. Graduate Kelita Evans will speak at the first commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and Katherine Godfrey, a junior at Tecumseh High School, will be the commencement speaker for the second ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Clark State alumni Randy Kapp and Johnne Heard will receive the inaugural Alumni Awards.

Clark State to Hold Pinning Ceremonies for 2018 Nursing Graduates

The Clark State Community College – Springfield Regional School of Nursing will hold pinning ceremonies for 122 graduating nurses who have completed their programs of study. The pinning ceremony for the Practical Nursing students will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 10; 35 Practical Nursing students will be conferred at this ceremony. The pinning ceremony for Registered Nursing students will be held 6 p.m., Friday, May 11; 87 Registered Nursing students will be conferred at this ceremony. Both ceremonies will be held at the Clark State Performing Arts Center in downtown Springfield.

Clark State to Welcome Experienced Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs

Clark State Community College will welcome Dr. Michael Brown to the interim position of vice president for academic affairs (VPAA). Dr. Brown has served as interim VPAA at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, CT. Prior to that position, he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at North Carolina Wesleyan. Brown will begin his service to Clark State on May 7. He will lead in this position until a permanent vice president of academic affairs is named.

Clark State President Blondin Elected to Serve on Two National Boards

Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, president of Clark State Community College, has been elected to the American Association of Community College (AACC) Board of Directors and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Board of Trustees. The AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges. Blondin’s term with the AACC Board will begin on July 1 and continue through June 30, 2021. The HLC accredits colleges and universities in a 19-state region of the United States. Her four-year HLC Board term will begin September 1 of this year.

Clark State Honors Outstanding Students at Annual Event

Clark State Community College held Student Recognition Night at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. Student Recognition Night is an annual event recognizing and celebrating outstanding students. The keynote speaker was Katy Cardoza. Faculty, staff and student organization advisors nominated outstanding students in their programs.

Clark State Receives Award of Excellence from American Association of Community Colleges

Clark State Community College has been presented with the 2018 American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) CEO/Board Relationship Award of Excellence. The AACC Excellence Awards recognize exceptional work among the nation’s two-year colleges. Clark State was nominated for the award by several professional organizations and individuals including Jack Hershey, president and CEO of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges. The AACC reported that the Clark State Board of Trustees demonstrates an unwavering commitment to students and adheres to a strong shared governance model that encourages input from faculty, staff and student leaders.

Clark State Receives MAE&T Designation as Top School for Military, Veteran Education

Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T) has awarded Clark State Community College the designation of a Top School in its 2018 MAE&T Guide to Colleges & Universities, measuring best practices in military and veteran education. MAE&T's 2018 Guide to Colleges & Universities arms students with information about institutions that go above and beyond to give back to servicemen and women. This year, institutions were evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, general support, on-campus support and online support services.

Clark State Invests in Environmentally Savvy Lighting System

Clark State Community College students have seen the new light, and it is LED! The College recently teamed up with Energy Optimizers to install new LED lighting throughout Shull Hall on the Springfield campus. The installation of the new lighting will save Clark State on electrical costs, operations and maintenance. Expected annual savings is more than $9,000. The LED lighting system has a life expectancy of more than 20 years.

Clark State and Springfield Police Division Enter into MOU, Establish Joint Community Mission

The Clark State Community College Police Academy has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Springfield Police Division (SPD) establishing a joint mission to better train future candidates of the Springfield Police Division, Criminal Justice students and current police officers. The cooperative effort aims to give the Springfield community the most current training for police officers and provide excellent training opportunities to students.

Project Jericho Celebrates National Poetry Month With Arts Programming for Youth

Project Jericho celebrates National Poetry Month through innovative arts programs designed to build relationships. Girls in the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center will write poems and see their work published in an anthology. Additionally, teen girls and their female caregivers will gather at Project Jericho to invest in their relationship: dialoguing, making visual art and co-imagining their future. This dual programming is part of a long-term partnership between Project Jericho and Tasha Golden, a career songwriter turned public health researcher.

Clark State to Offer Literacy Camp, College Credit Opportunity to Children, Parents of Springfield Promise Neighborhood

Clark State Community College will host a literacy camp this summer for the youth of the Springfield Promise Neighborhood. Parents and guardians who reside in the Springfield Promise Neighborhood are encouraged to attend the “Community Promise: A Family Education Initiative” event with their children on April 19 to learn more about the free camp.

John Landess to Receive Founder’s Award at Clark State Circle of Friends Gala, Celtic Woman to Perform

The Clark State Performing Arts Center will honor John Landess with the prestigious Founder’s Award at the Clark State Circle of Friends Gala on April 21. The Circle of Friends Gala, presented by Kapp Construction and Security National Bank, will begin at 5 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. Celtic Woman will take the stage at 8 p.m. in the Kuss Auditorium at the Clark State Performing Arts Center.

Clark State Community College Increases Mental Health Resources, Training for Students, Staff

Clark State Community College continues to keep the health and wellness of students a top priority. The college recently established a NAMI ON CAMPUS Club for students. NAMI ON CAMPUS at Clark State will be present at student events throughout the year to raise awareness about stigma and mental health issues and educate about treatment resources. Clark State will host an Intimate Partner Violence and Diverse Communities on Campus training on April 11 and a QPR Gatekeeper training on April 18.

Clark State Holds 31st Annual Health Fair April 4

The Clark State Community College 31st annual Health Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 4 in the LRC, Security National Bank Community Room 207-209 on Leffel Lane at the Springfield campus. The Health Fair is free of charge and open to Clark State faculty, staff, students and the public. More than 45 agencies from Springfield and Dayton will be on-site to provide various health screenings, services and tests.

Clark State’s 2018 Diversity Conference Brings National Speaker to Springfield

Clark State Community College’s 2018 Diversity Conference “Diversity in the Workplace” will be held at 9 a.m., Friday, April 13. The event will feature guest speaker Chuck Underwood, a pioneer in the field of generational study and business strategies. Underwood is the founder/principal of Ohio-based generational consulting firm The Generational Imperative, Inc. His 2017 book, “America’s Generations in the Workplace, Marketplace, and Living Room” is a comprehensive presentation of generational business and personal-life dynamics.
