Clark State Community College will welcome the inaugural class of Champaign County Scholars and the 14th class of Champion City Scholars with induction ceremonies to be held this week. The Champaign County Scholars Program will induct 17 students, and the Champion City Scholars Program had a record number of applicants this year, and 45 qualified students will be inducted into the program.

Eighties music artist sensation, Cyndi Lauper, wrote the music and lyrics for Kinky Boots. Executive director of the Clark State Performing Arts Center Adele Adkins said for her, Kinky Boots is as close to a “perfect musical” as possible.

Clark State Community College will hold a career informational event for students interested in the expanding field of Judicial Court Reporting (JCR) on Saturday, October 28. The Judicial Court Reporting program is a completely online program. An associate degree is earned upon completion, and Clark State has a 100 percent job placement upon completion.

Clark State Community College has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Community College Alliance for Agricultural Advancement and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The five-year MOU is in accordance with the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act. It encompasses organizations that share the common goal of ensuring quality education and training of field practitioners to enhance the natural resources stewardship in concert with agricultural productivity.

Clark State Community College and Miami Valley Adapted Sports (MVAS) will host a Wheelchair Basketball event at Clark State on Thursday, October 26. The MVAS Raptors basketball team will compete against teams made up of students, faculty, staff and community members. Wheelchairs will be made available to students interested in participating in the basketball game. Refreshments will be served and raffle items will be available. Proceeds and all donations will benefit MVAS.

Former Clark State Community College Vice President, Marsha Bordner, will appear at Clark State alongside her husband, Tuskegee Airman Harold Brown, this month to discuss their autobiography, “Keep Your Airspeed Up: The Story of a Tuskegee Airman.” Brown and Bordner will speak at 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 23 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. The community is invited and admission is free.

Clark State Community College will host the 10th annual Volley for the Cure on Wednesday, October 18 in the gymnasium on the Leffel Lane campus in Springfield. Teams from Clark State, Bobby Fisher Distributing and Assurant will participate in Volley for the Cure. All monies raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer Endowment Fund of Clark County.

Clark State Community College will welcome Black Violin for their second performance at the Clark State Performing Arts Center this Saturday, October 14. Black Violin offers a unique blend of hip-hop and classical music that reaches audiences of all generations. The performance will feature musicians from the Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestra and Urban Strings, a Columbus-based youth orchestra.

Project Scare-A-Crow, an annual fall tradition, returns to Clark County on Friday, October 6. Assisted by professional artist Sherry Ringler, Project Jericho families will design 21 traditional scarecrows. Project Scare-A-Crow began seven years ago when Project Jericho created an art program that had families create scarecrows together. Last year Project Jericho partnered with National Trail Parks and Recreation District to create a larger scarecrow exhibit that was opened to the public.

John Devillier, Clark State Community College’s vice president for business affairs, has resigned from his position. He began his position in June 2017. Larry Wakefield, the former interim vice president for business affairs, will be returning to Clark State this month and will work as the interim vice president for business affairs through June 2018. Later this fall, a search committee will be formed to look for a permanent replacement.

The ELI is part of the League for Innovation in the Community College, an international nonprofit organization with a mission to cultivate innovation in the community college environment.

The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) awarded Mellanie Toles of Clark State Community College the National Professional Board Staff Member Award at the annual Leadership Congress in Las Vegas, Nevada. Toles first won the award for the Central Region and was then chosen from among five ACCT regions for this award. ACCT has 1200 community college members.

Box 27 is a non-profit, volunteer organization of men and women who provide direct support to the Springfield Fire Division and Springfield Police Division.

Clark State Community College and CareSource have partnered for the first time to host a Fall Career Fair on Thursday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Fall Career Fair will be held at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street in downtown Springfield. Admission is free. There will be 32 registered employers seeking employees for more than 100 positions.

Clark State Community College will hold Scholarship Recognition Night on Friday, September 22 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. The Clark State Foundation has awarded $168,817 in scholarships so far this academic year to 103 students who will be honored at the event along with the recipients of the Trustee Scholarships, Champion City Scholars, Choose Ohio First Scholarships and Tech Prep Scholarships.

CONSTITUTION Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States CONSTITUTION and those who have become U.S. citizens. Clark State Community College has launched Project Grey Literature, a program designed to provide reading material to local retirement and assisted living communities. Project Grey Literature is the brainchild of Dr. Sterling Coleman, director of library services for Clark State, who said he initiated the program because of a glaring need he noticed while visiting fellow church members in an assisted living facility.

Clark State Community College launched a Fitness Challenge Tuesday, September 5 for faculty, staff and students. Clark State continues to build on their health initiatives. A total of 35 faculty, staff and students have registered to participate in the Fitness Challenge. Registration is ongoing.
