Clark State Community College will introduce a Banking program option with the start of the fall semester this year. The new program falls under the management umbrella and focuses on preparing students for a career in the banking industry. Students will have the option of an associate degree and/or two certificates. The creation of the program was community driven and is designed to prepare students to meet the demands of banking in local branches.

Clark State Community College will welcome Mathemagician Dr. Arthur Benjamin to the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center for two complimentary performances on Thursday, March 23. Benjamin is the Smallwood Family Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, and a professional magician who entertains with faster-than-a-calculator mental addition, multiplication and other amazing feats of the mind.

In a continuing effort to make college more affordable for students, the Clark State Community College bookstore will convert to online format and offer textbooks via eCampus beginning with 2017 summer semester classes. The Clark State administration was looking for a way to reduce the student cost and provide enhanced service. Clark State students will be able to ship books to their home or to the Clark State Greene Center, Leffel Lane or Ohio Hi-Point (Bellefontaine) locations.

Clark State Community College has seen a three percent increase in enrollment over this same time last year. The College expects enrollment to continue to increase with the start of Spring B term on March 13. The Spring Semester 2017 headcount is currently 6,394. Enrollment for Spring B term will continue through next week.

Clark State Community College President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin will be a featured author in a book being released this spring. Blondin penned a chapter for “Generation X Presidents Leading Community Colleges” at the request of editor Martha Ellis. Blondin was tapped by Ellis to contribute to the book because of her successful role as a Generation X president.

DRMA is a catalyst of innovation, a builder of partnerships and a champion for education to keep manufacturing in the Dayton region moving forward.

The Clark State Performing Arts Center will host a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with special guests Danú on Saturday, March 11. Danú is a leading traditional Irish ensemble. Their concerts throughout Ireland feature high-energy performances and a mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire.

Clark County’s own Ron Gordon, officially took the helm at Clark State Community College as dean of student support services in January. Gordon began his career at Clark State in March of 2007 as a recruiter for truck driver training. He has also served as director of athletics, and director of student services at the Clark State Greene Center campus in Beavercreek.

Clark State Community College Board of Trustee Andy Bell was honored as a Champion of Clark State at the 55th Annual Charter Night held Tuesday, February 21. Faculty and staff were honored for their professional excellence and years of service with the College, and retired professor Dr. Lawrence Killian was honored with the Professor Emeritus Award.

Clark State Community College will begin offering ABLE/GED preparatory courses at Graham High School in Champaign County February 28. The Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) and General Education Development (GED) courses are new to the Graham High School location.

Clark State Community College will hold the 55th annual Charter Night on Tuesday, February 21 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the program at 6:15 p.m. Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin said Charter Night serves as a reminder to the college and the community about the founding of Clark State, celebrated through the establishment of the charter to operate as a post-secondary institution in the region.

Clark State Community College Professor of Communication, Michelle Coleman, has been appointed to serve as the executive director of the Ohio Communication Association (OCA). Coleman has been teaching at Clark State since 1999 and has been active with the OCA for more than 15 years. The OCA is an organization dedicated to the development and practice of human communication theory, research and application. The personal and professional experiences of membership include educators, public relations professionals, students, communication consultants and more.

Clark State has teamed with local captioner Sue Terry to caption the theatrical presentation of Guys and Dolls at Kenton Ridge High School in Springfield. The event will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 18.

Clark State Community College and Community Mercy Health Partners will host a dinner event in honor of Black History Month at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, February 23 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. “Health in the Black Community” will address health-related issues with a panel of experts and replace Clark State’s annual Black History Month “Soul Food” event.

The Clark State Community College Board of Trustees has elected long-time Board member Sharon Evans as chairperson for 2017. Evans served as vice chairperson for the past two years. Bradley Phillips is entering his second six-year term as a member of the Clark State Board of Trustees and will now serve as vice chairperson.

Clark State Community College will celebrate Black History Month with a February calendar full of events for students and the community. Clark State will present speakers, book reviews and documentaries that reflect the achievements of African Americans. The month will culminate with a combined dinner event with the Springfield Regional Medical Center featuring local minority physicians for a panel discussion.

On Friday, January 27, President Trump signed an Executive Order entitled, "Protecting the Nation from Terrorist Attacks by Foreign Nationals." As you know, Clark State has a number of international students on campus, and I am concerned about the effects that this Executive Order will have on our students and their families.

The Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center has a little something for everyone in the month of February. The highly-acclaimed Central State University Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 2. Rosanne Cash will make her debut at 8 p.m., Saturday, February 11. Following Cash, Rick Springfield will take the stage for the first time on Tuesday, February 14.
