Clark State Welcomes CareSource JobConnect Life Coach to Campus as Part of Student Support Services

The Clark State Community College Office of Student Support now has a CareSource JobConnect life coach on campus weekly to provide students with additional support services. Clark State alumnus and certified life coach Eric Mata works with a range of clients and coaches them to a higher quality of life. His expertise is working with members in recovery from opiate addiction and guiding them through the process of obtaining employment, career development, education and achieving goals the client has for themselves, all while building a solid foundation for a life in recovery.

Clark State to Host Presidential Awards, Raise Funds for Clark State Foundation Scholarships

Clark State Community College will host its first Presidential Awards banquet on Wednesday, October 2 in support of the Clark State Foundation. The event was created to honor the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus, Emerging Leader and Richard O. Brinkman awards, as well as to raise funds for student scholarships. The Foundation scholarships are awarded for financial need, academic performance or a specific program of study to both full-time and part-time students. The Presidential Awards banquet will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. Tickets are $75.

Clark State President Supports Ohio’s New TechCred Program

The DeWine administration unveiled the State of Ohio’s new TechCred program September 25. The TechCred program is designed to train incumbent workers for in-demand jobs in Ohio. “Clark State Community College is excited for the opportunity to work with local businesses to offer industry-focused credentials and training that will strengthen the local workforce and bridge the skills gap. I applaud Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted for addressing the challenge of training workers with the skills businesses need in today’s changing workforce,” said Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, president of Clark State. “We appreciate the administration’s continued support of workforce development.”

Clark State’s Dr. Matt Franz to be Honored with comSpark Tech Power Player Award

Dr. Matt Franz, Clark State Community College vice president of information technology & emergency management, has been selected for the comSpark Tech Power Player Award. The comSpark Tech Power Player Award is given to the leading CIOs, CTOs, CISOs and other senior-level IT executives. This award celebrates the leadership of executives in both public and privately-held companies, as well as leading non-profits and government institutions. The Tech Power Player designation represents leadership excellence in technology.

Clark State Launches Third Annual Fitness Challenge

Clark State Community College has launched its third annual Fitness Challenge for faculty, staff and students. The Clark State Fitness Challenge encompasses two challenges: overall fitness (based on weight loss percentage) and the step challenge. Overall fitness results will be based on the percentage of body weight lost and the number of steps will be based on the total amount of actual steps taken throughout the challenge. Registration is ongoing.

Clark State to Hold Women’s Basketball Try-Outs September 23

Clark State Community College will hold women’s basketball try-outs at 7 p.m., Monday, September 23 in the gymnasium located at the Leffel Lane campus in Springfield. The Clark State women’s basketball season begins October 1 and runs until early March. Eligible student-athletes must be enrolled as a full-time student for the fall 2019 semester to play on the Eagles women’s basketball team.

Open House Planned for New Mercy Health Clinic at Clark State

Clark State Community College and Mercy Health will hold an open house in the Mercy Health Primary Care clinic on Wednesday, September 11 from noon to 3 p.m. The new health clinic serves as the primary medical care facility for Clark State students, faculty, staff and the community at large. It will also likely be used for student clinical experiences and internships. The new Mercy Health Primary Care clinic is located on the first floor of the Clark State Applied Science Center, 570 East Leffel Lane, Springfield. Visitors will be able to meet with the clinic staff, take a tour and learn about the full range of services provided.

Clark State Will Offer Supervisor Training Certification

Clark State Community College will offer Professional Supervisor Training beginning Thursday, September 19. The training course will be held weekly on Thursdays through November 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The course will address the core functional areas of supervision: management effectiveness, work ethic, assigning work, planning, effective communication, leadership, coaching, motivation, managing conflict and more. Participants will learn tools and guidelines to enhance personal development and utilize individual skills.

Clark State Welcomes New Dean of Health, Human, and Public Services

Clark State Community College has appointed Dr. Rhoda Sommers as the dean of Health, Human, and Public Services. Sommers is an experienced leader in higher education, having served as an academic dean for 11 years at two different institutions, Malone University in Canton, Ohio, and Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. She has also served as a full-time faculty member in teacher education for five years and taught elementary and middle school in Ohio and Pennsylvania for 13 years. Sommers grew up near Columbus, Ohio, earned her bachelor’s degree from Cedarville University, master’s degree from Grace College and her doctoral degree from Andrews University.

Clark State Adds 12-Week Term to Fall, Spring Semesters

Clark State Community College is now offering 12-week, D-term courses during the fall and spring semesters. Ron Gordon, dean of enrollment services for Clark State, said as an open access institution, students are applying to Clark State at various times of the year and expecting the opportunity to begin taking classes as soon as possible. D-term is slightly accelerated compared to the 16-week term. Students will have 12 weeks of instruction beginning September 16 and will conclude the first week of December. Clark State offers year-round registration.

Clark State, Clark County Sheriff’s Office will Offer Free Active Shooter Training

Clark State Community College in partnership with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office will offer four active shooter training sessions free to the public beginning September 5. Clark State and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office want to ensure the public is prepared and will offer a modular, comprehensive, active killer survival presentation to the citizens of Clark County. These free active shooter training sessions are open to the public. No registration is required. These sessions are not weapons training classes. Some content may not be suitable for young children.

Clark State Welcomes Students with Fun Fair, Free Concert Featuring Alumnus Ryan Mundy

Clark State Community College will host a Welcome Back Fun Fair on Wednesday, August 28 featuring up-and-coming country artist Ryan Mundy from noon to 1 p.m. on the main campus in Springfield. Mundy is a 2013 graduate of Clark State with an associate degree in Business Management. Now managing his own country music career, Mundy has performed at venues in Nashville and Columbus. The Clark State Welcome Back Fun Fair is free of charge and will also feature a part-time student job fair, food, games, a bounce house for future Eagles, vendors and resources. The event will be held in front on Rhodes Hall beginning at 11 a.m.

New Coach Brings Experience, Excitement to Clark State Softball Program

Clark State Community College welcomed Christopher Wamsley as the new head coach of the women’s softball team. Wamsley said he believes this is an outstanding opportunity to make an immediate impact on a key portion of the athletic programs at Clark State, while also helping to develop a group of very well-rounded, successful student-athletes. The Clark State softball program will hold two open tryout sessions from 1 to 3 p.m., Tuesday, September 3 and Thursday, September 5 for any student interested in trying out for the 2019-2020 team.

Clark State Selected by AACC for Expansion of CyberSecurity Apprenticeship Program

Clark State Community College has been selected by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) for its Expanding Community College Apprenticeship (ECCA) Initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. The ECCA Initiative will provide direct support to Clark State to expand registered apprenticeship opportunities across the counties served by the college. AACC selected Clark State for nearly $140,000 in funding over a 32-month period effective immediately. Clark State was identified as uniquely positioned to provide relevant career and technical education in support of apprenticeship initiatives serving labor market needs, primarily in cybersecurity.

Project Jericho’s Rose City Mural Celebration and Dedication

Over twenty Project Jericho teenagers are immersed in the painting of a large outdoor mural in downtown Springfield. The Rose City mural located at 10 E. Main Street on the east facing wall of the Starrett & Fried building is a celebration of Springfield’s vibrant history of being the “floral center of the world” from the late 1800s until the 1930s. On Tuesday, August 27 from 5-6:30 p.m. the community is invited to attend the celebration and dedication of the mural located on site at the newly renovated outdoor space next to the Bushnell building.

Clark State Awarded $899,228 to Establish Program to Combat Opioid Epidemic

Clark State Community College has been awarded $899,228 in grant funding from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to combat the nation’s opioid crisis. Clark State’s grant proposal noted that many people in rural areas of Ohio have extremely limited access to medication-assisted treatment, and it is a critical issue in the rural areas of Southwest Ohio where opioid abuse rates are high but local access to treatment is limited. Clark State will partner with multiple employers and agencies across Clark, Greene, Champaign, Logan, Madison and Montgomery counties to ensure the successful delivery of the CDCA I and II and the PPRS paraprofessionals education and training programs.

Clark State to Hold Convocation August 12, as President Blondin begins 7th Year with College

Clark State Community College President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin will host her seventh Convocation on Monday, August 12. Blondin entered her seventh year of service with the College in July of this year. Convocation will focus on the services offered through Clark State’s Office of Student Support. Started in the summer of 2018, the Office of Student Support leverages community and college resources to enable students to address those barriers and complete their degrees. Clark State Convocation will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center. All Clark State campus locations will open at 11:30 a.m. following Convocation.

Clark State to Increase Security Measures, Offer Counseling to Students, Faculty and Staff Affected by Shooting in Dayton

Following the devastating news of an early morning mass shooting on Sunday, August 4, in Dayton’s Oregon District, Clark State Community College has pledged to ramp up campus security and offer counseling services to those affected. Our hearts are with everyone impacted by the tragic events in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas. As a community we continue to work together to offer resources and supportive services to our students, faculty and staff.
